What is the maximum distance that this neutron star should be if it is visible to the naked eye.?
If the absolute mag is -65.7. What is the maximum distance that this neutron star should be if it is visible to the naked eye.
Other informations:
Luminosity as 2.57x10^29 W
Radius 6km
Temp 10^7 K
Please show the equations for me to understand. Thanks!
-65.7 is really bright!
Remember that absolute magnitude (M) is the magnitude of an object at 10 parsecs away. Apparent magnitude (m) is what we actually see.
These are related by: m-M = 5 log(d) - 5, where d is the distance in parsecs. This is the distance modulus equation.
So what you need is the faintest star magnitude visible to the naked eye which is around 6.
So now, m=6 M=-65.7 and solve for d which will be in parsecs.
The extra information is unnecessary.
