Why will my Vet not cut my cats claws? They are very long but they say they do not like to do it?
I asked my vet to trim my cat's claws when she went in to be speyed but they said they didn't like cutting cats claws but would look at them. When I picked her up they said they were fine as they were not retracted, however they are very long as she is an indoor cat. She won't let me go near them as she is a very nervous cat anyway. I thought whilst she was under would have been a perfect opportunity?
Strange. I've never heard a vet say they wouldn't trim a cat's nails. And you're right - it would have been quite easy to do while she was under. Have you tried having someone else help you trim the claws? If a cat objects to nail trims the easiest way to do it is have the other person hold the cat wrapped up in a small blanket or a towel. Take out one paw at time and trim. This way if the cat tries to kick or claw with the other legs it can't. If you still can't do them then look in your phone book or online for a groomer experienced with cats. They'll do them for a nominal fee.
The more often you trim the nails, the more your cat will get used to having them done. They really should be trimmed at least every other week. The best nail clippers to use are the ones that look like a little pair of scissors like this - http://grooming.petedge.com/Master-Grooming-Tools-Pet-Nail-Scissors-Medium-TP19104.pro?parentCategoryId=190&categoryId=214&subCategoryId=501 They make it really easy for you to see where you're clipping so a) you can get really close to the quick and b) you don't accidentally cut into the quick.
The comment that a scratching post is a substitute for trimming nails is grossly incorrect. A cat's nails are like an onion - in many layers. When a cat scratches on a post or rug it only removes the outermost layer of the tail - it does NOT shorten or trim the nail. Not trimming the nails can lead to nails that grow so long they imbed into the paw pad. I've seen this with cats that have come into the shelter I volunteer with. It's VERY painful for the cat and can actually end up requiring surgery to fix.
Show cats needs their claws trimmed short so they don't end up scratching the judges at shows as they carry them to the judge's stand. If "cutting claws too much" was harmful to cats - wouldn't all the show cats in this world be having major problems? Think about it. Might want to be sure you know what you're talking about before posting falsehoods on here.
